A trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot within a taut band of skeletal muscle that can be painful when compressed or during muscle contraction. These points often produce referred pain, meaning the discomfort is felt in areas distant from the actual spot. Trigger points may feel like small nodules, typically 2–10mm in size, located where nerves connect to muscle fibers. They are most commonly found in sedentary individuals between 27 and 55 years of age.
Trigger points can develop for a variety of reasons, including:
Trigger-point therapy targets hyper-irritable spots to reduce pain and restore normal muscle function. Our skilled therapists locate the trigger points and apply the appropriate amount of pressure, stimulating oxygenation and blood flow to the affected tissue. This process helps activate the body’s natural healing mechanisms and can relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore muscle function.
