Bobath Method for Stroke Patients
Bobath Method, commonly referred to as ‘neuro-developmental treatment’ (NDT), was developed in the 1940’s by Dr Karel Bobath and Berta Bobath, a doctor and physiotherapist, who shared an interest in understanding the problems of adults and children with neurological conditions. The method has been used by therapists worldwide ever since. Although the basic concept has not changed, it has evolved over time.
How does NDT work?
The treatment incorporates sensory input to produce a desired motor response. NDT aims to promote active, efficient, automatic movements during functional activity. The emphasis is on therapeutic handling which focuses on making desired movements possible, while preventing undesired movements. Undesired movements are prevented because they can produce secondary problems which in the long run lead to reduction in the functional potential.
